The Black Panther Party for Self Defense Huey P Essay Example For Students
The Black Panther Party for Self Defense: Huey P Essay . Newton an Bobby Seale8April03History 204In 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prizefor his nonviolent methods of attempting to attain change for americanBlacks through leadership. Nonviolence had achieved success with the CivilRights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Segregation and thebarriers set up for american Blacks to keep them from voting were seeminglyeasier to overcome than were the issues of inferior public services such asschooling and prejudice. Many american Blacks decided by the middle of the1960s that the civil rights movement as headed by Dr. Martin Luther KingJr. had not altered their lives to the extent of acceptable living. Theyfelt that the focus should be placed more on their equality socially andeconomically than on their equality politically. As a result, americanBlacks began to gravitate towards a more direct form of action to receive amore direct form of change quicker than it had come about through Dr. We will write a custom essay on The Black Panther Party for Self Defense: Huey P specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Martin Luther King Jr.s methods. Black militancy emerged in the middle and late 1960s. Black leaderslike Floyd McKissick. The national director of the Congress of RacialEquality (CORE) and Stokely Carmichael, the elected chairman of theSouthern Christian Leadership Conference (SNLC) were both leaders whopreached the doctrine of Black Power. Black Power was more than just a fad. It was an ideal that appealed to many American Blacks that were tired ofwaiting for the gradual effects of nonviolent practices to occur. Itencouraged american Blacks to build themselves up by establishing powerbases, solidifying Black communities into political blocs. This was anattempt to force improvement of the treatment of american Blacks. Thedoctrine required american Black leaders to unify and lead, in a sense, become directly responsible to their followers. A very important digressionfrom Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.s nonviolent teachings in the Black Powerdoctrine was the calling for american Blacks to meet offensive violencewith defensive violence. They believed that Americans wouldrespectamerican Blacks standing with guns in their hands to defend themselvesrather than kneeling passively as the oppressed. In October of 1966, The Black Panther Party for Self Defense wasfounded in Oakland, California by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale while theywere both student activists at Merritt Junior College. Under the influenceof Malcolm X, the nationalist struggles in theThirdWorld, andrevolutionaries such as Fidel Castro, and Mao Tse Tong, their major goal infounding The Black Panther Party for Self Defense was to protect theamerican Black community from the treatment by White police actions whichwere deemed brutal. The Black Panther Party for Self Defense differedfrom other groups with its message of revolutionary intercommunalism. This was essentially a socialist way of approaching issues within acommunity, where all shared in the responsibility ofbuildingthecommunity. During the mid 1960s, The Black Panther Party for Self Defense called for american Blacks to take control oftheirhighunemployment, bad housing, police brutality, poor health care, inferiorpublic schooling system and oppressive police forces. During the late1960s, The Black Panther Party for Self Defense replaced the BlackMuslims as the most feared and publicized american Black extremist group. They encouraged the use of weapons for both self defense and for self offense against people that were believed to be oppressing them. While manybelieved that The Black Panther Party for Self Defense instilled inamerican Blacks a sense of pride that was very much needed, the FederalBureau of Investigations (FBI) called them the most dangerous and violenceprone of all extremist groups after FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover assigned aspecial task force to monitor the partys actions after he determined theywere too radical. However, Seale says of The Black Panther Party for Self Defense: People still believe we are what the FBI tried to paint us as: ablack, militant hate group. The Black Panther Party for Self Defense wasa group that favored violent revolution, if necessary, to bring aboutchanges that they deemed mandatory to the equal treatment of americanBlacks. In time, The Black Panther Party for Self Defense dropped theSelf Defense label from its name and became known as simply The B lackPanther Party. The Ten-Point Program was drafted on October 15, 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale and formed the foundation of ideology for the BlackPanther Party. It became the list of demands of the party and the goals ofthe struggle to regain their american Black communities and demanded equalrights for the minorities in The United States. The Ten Point Programread as follows: We Want Freedom. We Want Power To Determine The DestinyOf Our Black Community. . We believe that Black people will not be freeuntil we are able to determine our destiny.. We Want Full Employment ForOur People. We believe that the federal government is responsible andobligated to give every man employment or a guaranteed income. We believethat if the White American businessmen will not give full employment, thenthe means of production should be taken from the businessmen and placed inthe community so that the people of the community can organize and employall of its people and give a high standard of living.. We Want An End ToThe Robbery By The Capitalists Of Our Black Community. W e believe that thisracist government has robbed us, and now we are demanding the overdue debtof forty acres and two mules. Forty acres and two mules were promised 100years ago as restitution for slave labor and mass murder of Black people. .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35 , .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35 .postImageUrl , .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35 , .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35:hover , .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35:visited , .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35:active { border:0!important; } .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35:active , .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35 .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue572d5365a5009075efd203c13184e35:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The motet EssayWe will accept the payment in currency which will be distributed to ourmany communities. The Germans are now aiding the Jews in Israel for thegenocide of the Jewish people. The Germans murdered six million Jews. TheAmerican racist has taken part in the slaughter of over fifty million Blackpeople; therefore, we feel that this is a modest demand that we make.. WeWant Decent Housing Fit For The Shelter Of Human Beings. We believe that ifthe White Landlords will not give decent housing to our Black community, then the housing and the land should be made into cooperatives so that ourcommunity, with government aid, can build and make decent housing for itspeople.. We Want Education For Our People That Exposes The True Nature OfThis Decadent American Society. We Want Education That Teaches Us Our TrueHistory And Our Role In The Present-Day Society. We believe in aneducational system that will give to our people a knowledge of self. If aman does not have knowledge of himself and his position in society and theworld, then he has little chance to relate to anything else.. We Want AllBlack Men To Be Exempt From Military Service. We believe that Black peopleshould not be forced to fight in the military service to defend a racistgovernment that does not protect us. We will not fight and kill otherpeople of color in the world who, like Black people, are being victimizedby the White racist government of America. We will protect ourselves fromthe force and violence of the racist police and the racist military, bywhatever means necessary.. We Want An Immediate End To Police Brutality AndMurder Of Black People. We believe we can end police brutality in o ur Blackcommunity by organizing Black self-defense groups that are dedicated todefending our Black community from racist police oppression and brutality. The Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States gives a rightto bear arms. We therefore believe that all Black people should armthemselves for self- defense.. We believe that allBlack people should be released from the many jails and prisons becausethey have not received a fair and impartial trial.. We Want All BlackPeople When Brought To Trial To Be Tried In Court By A Jury Of Their PeerGroup Or People From Their Black Communities, AsDefinedByTheConstitution Of The United States. We believe that the courts should followthe United States Constitution so that Black people will receive fairtrials. The Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution gives a man aright to be tried by his peer group. A peer is a person from a similareconomic, social, religious, geographical, environmental, historical andracial background. To do this the court will be forced to select a juryfrom the Blac k community from which the Black defendant came. We have been, and are being, tried by all-White juries that have no understanding of theaverage reasoning man of the Black community.. We Want Land, Bread,Housing, Education, Clothing, Justice And Peace. When in the course ofhuman events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the politicalbands which have connected them with another, and to assume, among thepowers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws ofnature and natures God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions ofmankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them tothe separation. We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men arecreated equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certainunalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit ofhappiness. That, to secure these rights, governments are instituted amongmen, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; that, whenev er any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it isthe right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute a newgovernment, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing itspowers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect theirsafety and happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments longestablished should not be changed for light and transient causes; andaccordingly, all experience hath shown, that mankind are more disposed tosupper, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishingthe forms to which they are accustomed. But, when a long train of abusesand usurpations, pursuing invariable the same object, evinces a design toreduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty,to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their futuresecurity. The Black Panther Party worked to bring about the grievancesdiscussed in Newton and Seales Ten Point Program. Under the direct ion ofHuey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, every Black Panther Party chapter set upfree breakfast programs for young children. They are presently feedingsomewhere over 5,000 children per week. The food was pressured out ofbusinessmen raking the profits from the ghettoes and from contributions toThe Black Panther Party from residents and friends. Medical clinics werealso set up by every chapter. The clinics were viewed as a necessity inblack communities which are desperately in need of the most elemental care. .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052 , .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052 .postImageUrl , .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052 , .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052:hover , .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052:visited , .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052:active { border:0!important; } .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052:active , .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052 .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub234ea779d6fb6ca6a1f767f8c384052:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Elderly Nutrition EssayFor children of all ages, liberation schools, as they were known by TheBlack Panther Party were established to counter-balance theracist, stultifying education that american Black children encountered everyday intheir public schools. Community control of the police was a major issue forThe Black Panther Party and in numerous cities, there was engagement inpetition drives seeking community, local control and decentralization ofthe police force. Free clothing drives were also enacted to distribute oldbut still good clothing to the neediest of american Black families. Armedself defense was a major policy wherein all members were taught the use andnecessi ty of armed self defense, not only of themselves but for the entireamerican Black community Thus, if a family was threatened, or young kid wasbeaten up, The Black Panther Party could be immediately called. A very important practice of The Black Panther Party was the sale anddistribution of the Panther Paper from which most of their revenue wasderived Seventy five thousand papers were distributed and the PantherPaper was viewed as a national American Black community newspaper. TheBlack Panther Party made significant contributions totheartofpropaganda. It was very adept at spreading its message and ideas throughits newspaper The Black Panther mass rallies, speaking tours, slogans, posters, leaflets, cartoons, buttons, symbols (such as the clenched fist),graffiti, political trials, and even funerals. The Black Panther Party alsospread its ideas through very skillful use of the television, radio, andprint media. In all their programs, The Black Panther Party stressed puttingsocialism into practice, meeting peoples real needs, and educating them tothe necessity and possibility of revolution. As a response to themilitancy of The Black Panther Party, the FBI formed a team under thesupervision called COINTELPRO to prevent them from uniting and growing inpower. Black Panther Party local chapters were infiltrated by informantsand their offices were raided on many occasions. The Black Panthers and thepolice force were often involved in many shoot outs against each other. Shoot outs occurred in California, New York and Chicago. On one occasion,Black Panther Party member and Illinois state leader, Fred Hampton and MarkClark were killed by police during a raid, and in 1967, Black Panther Partyfounder and Minister of Defense, Huey Newton was sent to prison formanslaughter after an Oakland shoot out between The Black Panther Partyand the police left an officer dead. A Free Huey movement was born and in1971, a California Court of Appeals reversed his conviction twenty twomonths later. After he was released, he attempted to keep The Black PantherParty from involving themselves in police conflicts and tried to put morefocus on the aforementioned community programs so that there would be anincrease in support for The Black Panther Party. Bobby Seale was accusedof inciting riots during the 1969 Democratic Party National Convention. Heserved four years in prison. Despite The Black Panther Party originally denouncing electoralpolitics, it reversed its standpoint and provided the leadership forseveral voter registration drives in the Oakland and Alameda County areabetween 1972 and 1977. In 1973, Bobby Seale ran for the office of Mayor ofOakland. Although he did not win, he not only received forty -three percentof the vote but he also forced the white Republican incumbent into a runoff. His bid for mayor sparked an increase in voter registration andelectoral involvement by american Blacks nationwide. These drives werevery important factors in the elections of Alameda Countys first blacksupervisor, John George, in 1976, and Oaklands first black mayor, LionelWilson, in 1977. The Black Panther Party experienced a drop in its membership numbersafter the arrests of its founders. Although both Newton and Seale tried tounify the party after their respective releases, their attempts to workcooperatively with political and social reformists resulted in the movementbecoming too diverse. In 1974, Bobby Seale resigned as chairman of TheBlack Panther Party and started an organization called Youth EmpowermentStrategies. The Black Panthers disbanded by the early 1980s and in 1989,Huey Newton was killed by a drug dealer in Oakland, California where theentire movement was born. Works CitedAbron, J. Importance of Exercise Essays
Importance of Exercise Essays Importance of Exercise Essay Importance of Exercise Essay Most of us know by now that we should be exercising on a regular basis. But do you really know why exercise is so important? Not only does working out help you shed a few pounds, but there are also many other compelling reasons to include some regular activity in your routine. To begin with, Exercise has many benefits that will help people live longer, healthier, and happier lives. Not only is exercise healthful, it also has an effect on our overall appearance and body composition, which can directly influence self-esteem, self-worth, and level of confidence. It reduces depression and instantly lifts mood due to the production of endorphins, the feel-good hormones. No matter how down you are feeling before you exercise, you will definitely feel a lot more upbeat by the end of your session. The reason I chose exercise as my topic is because I think it plays a very big role in our lives. If you take care of your body, your body is going to take care of you. I feel that everybody should have some sort of exercise in their life, itââ¬â¢s not only good for you but it can have positive effects internally and externally. Next, I am all for exercising and playing sports. Exercise improves focus and mental clarity. Research has shown that those who participate in regular exercise have less chance of suffering from Alzheimerââ¬â¢s and senility. It promotes better energy levels. It may sound unlikely, but the more you exercise, the more energy you will have. Improved strength and stamina are common with regular exercise. Those bothersome chores will feel much easier, and you will be able to do more for longer. Exercise increases muscle tone, leaving you looking more defined. The extra muscle mass will also help to increase your resting metabolism. It can improve self-esteem and self-confidence. Once you start toning up, you will look better and feel better. The extra energy, stamina, and endorphins will spill over into other areas of your life. You will feel more in control of yourself and your life. Thirty minutes every day is ideal. If 30 minutes is too big a call, try to break it up into smaller intervals. Go for a walk at lunchtime, or use the stairs at the office instead of the elevator. Use your car less and make anà effort to ride a bike or walk. It all adds up. Types of beneficial exercise include brisk walking, jogging, running, swimming, tennis, skating and rollerblading, skiing, yard work, walking the dog, dancing, resistance work, fitness classes, sports, cycling, jump rope, and just running around and playing with the kids. Try to find activities that you are good at and enjoy. If you have fun while you are working out, you will want to keep going, and your sense of well-being will be heightened. If you donââ¬â¢t enjoy your workout, swap to something else. Once you have incorporated a regular workout into you daily routine, you will quickly notice the difference when you skip a session. Having less energy and feeling more stressed and anxious are some of the most obvious symptoms that quickly return. Once you have started exercising regularly, you will wonder how you ever managed without it. Your body and health will reward you as well. Last, Aerobic activity will improve both the health and efficiency of your heart and lungs. The improved circulation results in a good complexion and improved transportation of oxygen around the body. With regular exercise, there is a decreased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Exercise increases bone strength, helping to alleviate the painful condition known as osteoporosis (loss of calcium in bones). Regular exercise also promotes a healthy immune system. Exercise can improve balance and coordination, as well as cardiovascular fitness, helping reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack. Exercise also helps you sleep better. The actual physical activity will ensure that your body and mind are ready for a great nightââ¬â¢s sleep. Another benefit is decreasing stress levels. Worries tend to diminish in size while you are concentrating on working out. Combined with the production of endorphins, stress and anxiety will decrease. References 1.) Hard Rock Cafe - Essay Example A list of all activities required to complete the project (typically categorized within a work breadown structure), 2. The time (duration) that each activity will tae to completion, and 3. The dependencies between activities. With help of this CPM a manager can easily see the overral progress and which operations are to be crashed in order to complete a project in time. The total duration of the project is a sum of operations durations on the Critical path. Critical path is the sequence of activities which add up the longest overall duration. An additional parallel path through the network with the total durations shorter than the critical path is called a sub-critical or non-critical path (ââ¬Å"Critical Path Methodâ⬠, 2011). In the case of Rockfest, critical path is found using MS Project, Figure 1. In the first collumn there is the operations description, in the second, operations duration. There is Ganth diagram on the scheme with red marked crithical path. Therefore, the o verral duration of the project should be 23 weeks (the critical path duration). Crashing a project means shortening some operations to fullfill projectââ¬â¢s time requirements. If activity B (Selection local printer) would take 5 weeks instead of planned 3 weeks we must crash some operations because activity B is on the Critical Path. The crashing time should be 5-3=2 weeks.

Theodore Rex by Edmund Morris Essay Example for Free
Theodore Rex by Edmund Morris Essay Introduction Writing this paper, I faced a challenging task of exploring, discussing and analyzing a well-written book about one of the most prominent and controversial figures in American politics and history. In the first part of my report I would like to discover basic themes and concepts of the book as well as compare and contrast ââ¬Å"Theodore Rexâ⬠and other books about the twenty-sixth US President. Also I would like to concentrate my attention on the major accomplishments of the author and on possible bias found in the book. The book is a thorough and profound biographical account of Rooseveltââ¬â¢s presidency and discusses and evaluates his major deeds and successes. The book concentrates on the two presidential terms he served, while ââ¬Å"The Rise of Theodore Rooseveltâ⬠, another celebrated biographical work by Morris, sheds light on Rooseveltââ¬â¢s career before presidency. ââ¬Å"Theodore Rexâ⬠ends with Mr. Roosevelt quitting the office. Edmund Morris writes about Theodore Roosevelt with great respect combined with admiration. The author doesnââ¬â¢t always clearly state it, but we can read it between the lines. When exploring Roosevelt external policy in the global context, the author quotes London Morning Post that stated Rooseveltââ¬â¢s presidency marked, ââ¬Å"the emergence of a new world peacemaker: Mr. Roosevelts success has amazed everybody, not because he succeeded, but because of the manner by which he achieved success.â⬠(Morris, 2002: p.391) Roosevelt is positioned as a great an innovative man of state for the ample reason that he was the first US president to leave the country or to fly in an airplane. I strongly deem that any book addressing questions connected with politics or history canââ¬â¢t be absolutely free from bias. For instance, Morris argues that American world hegemony and superpower is largely, if not only, Rooseveltââ¬â¢s accomplishment. But we know that economic and political conditions at the beginning of the century were very favourable, and the president seized the moment and American gilded age so he enhanced countryââ¬â¢s position on the international arena. The book is different from others in many ways. First of all, it concentrates not only on the strengths of the twenty-sixth president, but also on his faults. The book provides the reader with full and comprehensive account of Roosevelt as a man of state and some insightful information about Roosevelt as a personality. Another difference is the focus of this biography solely on the presidential years of Theodore Roosevelt. Main Body Now let me proceed with evaluating the organization and the persuasive power of the book. The choice of the sources is satisfactory; the bibliography of the book is diverse and trustworthy. Morris consults sources dating from the early 20th centuries up to nowadays. The major material for Morrisââ¬â¢ research consists of Rooseveltââ¬â¢s presidential whitepapers and worksheets, his private documentation, the archives of John Hay, William Howard Taft and Owen Wister. The author manages to be stylistically good and historically balanced. The book gives very specific account of political events that happened during the presidency of Roosevelt and goes through every political crisis, external or internal. The book doesnââ¬â¢t give much information about personal life of the twenty-sixth president, but it makes the reader feel as if sharing all the daily routine with Mr. Roosevelt. Let me enlist the issues, on which the author concentrates most. Morris reminds us about the success of Rooseveltââ¬â¢s external policy and stresses the fact of US acquisition of Panama Canal and the Philippines, signing a treaty ending the Russo-Japanese War and strengthening American naval forces. The book states that, ââ¬Å"French foreign-policy experts believed him to be the strongest international personality since Bismarck.â⬠(Morris, 2002: 193) He gives a positive account of Rooseveltââ¬â¢s policy in the spheres of culture, science, and ecology and urges to keep in mind presidential initiatives to create national parks and monuments and to start national conservation policy. He praises the presidentââ¬â¢s ability of dealing with labor issues by discussing the settlement of the significant coal strike in the early 1990s. Still, the author admits the existence of complicated points during the Rooseveltââ¬â¢s career, for instance, the Brownsville Incident. I believe that Morris concentrates too much on the description of major and minor state affairs. The book is purely a narrative. Instead of going so deep into daily matters of the president, Morris might have included more analysis of Rooseveltââ¬â¢s policies and practices. I would like to read more about Roosevelt in the wider historical context; the reader wants not only a success story, but the discussion of presidentââ¬â¢s actions to ensure success. Still, enough attention is paid to important people in Rooseveltââ¬â¢s life, namely Edith and Alice. Morris shows us the twenty-sixth president as a loving husband and caring father. Rooseveltââ¬â¢s family supported him in the turmoil of state affairs, and the president valued his dearest and nearest very much. When his wife arrived, ââ¬Å"Careless of watching eyes, he threw his arms around Edith, then escorted her inside for supper.â⬠(Morris, 2002: 47) Morris clearly states what traits of character are necessary for an outstanding leader. The author describes sometimes controversial behavior and complicated character of the president. Some small personal details give us better understanding of Theodoreââ¬â¢s nature, for example, presidentââ¬â¢s habit to carry pistols with him. The detailed descriptions in a combination with easy way of presenting the information made the book seem convincing and trustworthy. Conclusion In the concluding part I would speak about the relevance and historical value of ââ¬Å"Theodore Rex The book is readable and enjoyable, giving insight into big and small issues of governing. Sometimes the book may seem to be too detailed for a non-professional reader. I dare call this book to be a research of Rooseveltââ¬â¢s biography, since it keeps track of everything taking place in the president administration. Morrisââ¬â¢ book may be useful for historians as well as for the general public. The book is very short still it has everything the one needs to know about Roosevelt and the US at the dawn of the 20th century. The organization of the book is good, but the tone of the story isnââ¬â¢t always adequate since Morris describes very official events using lyrical language. Letââ¬â¢s analyze the episode concerned with Panama-US treaty: ââ¬Å"Pens scratched across parchment. Wax melted on silk. Two oceans brimmed closer, ready to spill.â⬠(Morris, 2002: p.298) The prologue is marked by unnecessary romanticism, too. But it canââ¬â¢t be called a disadvantage since it saves the book from being boring. Paragraph and sentence structure is adequate and quite clear. And I didnââ¬â¢t notice any serious contradictions worth mentioning here. The organizational drawback is that personal and political episodes arenââ¬â¢t described in separate chapters. Still, the strictly chronological way of presenting the events with clear separation of the first and the second administration is definitely a plus. I believe that some practical solutions of social and economical problems, e.g. unemployment or discrimination, can be used by contemporary politicians as well. I would like to end my report with giving an overall assessment of ââ¬Å"Theodore Rexâ⬠by Edmund Morris. This account of Rooseveltââ¬â¢s presidency and charismatic personality is in-depth but transparent, analytical but charming, complex but inspiring. I believe that such a charismatic leader as Theodore Roosevelt definitely deserves such a brilliant biographer as Edmund Morris. à References: à Morris, E. 2002. Theodore Rex. Traumas Apologize and Healing of the Colonized and Radicalized Essay
Throughout the twentieth century, the trauma inflicted upon people of color as a by-product of colonization, racialization, and assimilation has left a lasting imprint not on only the lives of the oppressed, but on the lives of the generations that follow them as well. Years after these subjective events have passed and been recognized as unjust and immoral and formal apologies from the U.S. government have been made, the trauma remains ever present in the minds of individual victims as well as the affected community as a whole, and traumatic healing does not actualize. Racial oppression has been an overtly prevalent issue; from the unjust treatment in WWII Japanese relocation camps and Cambodian refugee camps, to the colonization of land, compromised reservation sovereignty, and physical abuse of Native Americans. Although not as pronounced, racial injustice still continues today in a more discretely structuralized manner that is purposely designed to allow forms of oppression to co ntinue yet have them over looked or passed off as lawful under U.S. regulation. The most prevalent forms of trauma that were experienced during these occasions include but are not limited to, post traumatic stress, intergenerational trauma, and soul wounds. The end of these oppressive events does not mean that repression is over, nor does it erase the scars it as left on the victims; the traumatic wounds still linger within individuals, the affected community, and through future generations. Attempts to remedy the harm done through apologizes, and in some instances compensation, address the error, and attempt to restore financial balance; however, they neglect to change the underlying inequality issues that were set in place that for the injustices to ... ...Loss in First Person Plural, Bontoc Eulogy, and History and Memory." Critic of the Application of Frederick Herzbergââ¬â¢s Two-Factor theory in Assessing and understanding employee motivation at work: a Ghanaian Perspective Essay
Critic of the Application of Frederick Herzbergââ¬â¢s Two-Factor theory in Assessing and understanding employee motivation at work: a Ghanaian Perspective. Patrick Ashiadey The Frederick Herzberg Two Factor Theory has had a considerable amount of practical and as well as theoretical influences. In fact, from a practical perspective, the influence of Herzbergââ¬â¢s motivation theory can be seen at every organizational level as well as within every department. From a theoretical perspective, Herzbergââ¬â¢s motivation theory can be perceived as having similarities to Maslowââ¬â¢s Theory of Need with the exception that for Herzbergââ¬â¢s theory, the needs arenââ¬â¢t placed in a progressive continuum, rather they are divided into two independent factors. Herzbergââ¬â¢s motivation theory emerged from a collection of data gathered by the interview of 203 accountants and engineers within the Pittsburgh area. The interview process consisted of asking the respondents to describe a work situation where they felt very happy as well as very unhappy. These descriptions were to include as many details as possible, including their feelings, the interpretation of the situation as well as the events that are suggestive of a change. The analysis of the responses confirmed the proposed hypothesis, where some factors where contributors to job satisfaction, while others were not. In addition, some factors were noted to be a source of dissatisfaction when absent. These were categorized as ââ¬Å"Motivatorsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Hygieneâ⬠factors, the latter also being referred to as Maintenance Factors. (Wikipedia, 2013). Employee motivation in Ghana however takes on a different turn due to many factors that flaw the two factor Theory. This white paper seeks to discuss but a few of these factors. Firstly the difference in cultures and upbringing of the typical Africa especially the Ghanaian worker right from infancy to the work age differs from those used in the interview process as they are from entirely different geographical areas. Th e average Ghanaian lives on or below the poverty line and as such will be happy just having a job with his basic salary regardless of the existence of motivators or hygiene factors. The mentality of the average Ghanaian worker makes him fear joblessness as other forms of employment are hard to come by and that alone will motivate him or her to stay in the job in the absence of motivators orà hygiene factors. That is the theory does not take into account individual personality traits that could provide a different response to a motivator or hygiene factor. The Theory also lacks in the understanding of the inter-relations between some of the motivators which I totally agree with as can be seen from http://www.leadership-central.com/two-factor-theory.html#ixzz2g2Bs3nao in comparison to the dual structure theory. Example, one might receive adequate job recognition nut he or she may not be satisfied with the level of responsibilities therefore one would question the internal motivational value of job recognition for the individual. Lack of highly skilled personnel in the Ghanaian job market, makes the average Ghanaian worker dependent upon his or her professional level which would be more or less sensitive to one or the other of the factors. Frederick Herzbergââ¬â¢s sample space for his research included 203 accountants and engineers, a huge disparity from the large population of Ghanaian workers in the public sector who were only recently introduced to the single spine structure. Responses to the same questions posed to the accountants and engineers that led to the development of the theory would have produced different results as what mattered to a worker in the US would not necessarily have mattered to a worker in Ghana like recreational facilities. This leads us to the point where hygiene factors and motivators vary depending on the types of individuals involved and the nature of work examined. There is also the case where there exists no prove that highly satisfied people are also high performers per a research done on the internet. Example is the average Ghanaian worker in the public sector enjoying the new single spine salary structure still requiring some form of extra cash for him or her to carry out his or her civil duties. All said and done, it is a well-known fact that the Application of the Two Factor Theory is definitely well established within organizational settings. In fact, every leader has the responsibility to ensure that their employeeââ¬â¢s hygiene factors are attended to and that proper motivators are implemented to increase job satisfaction. The most common mistake committed by leaders is to attend to the hygiene factor while expecting employee motivation. One application for Herzbergââ¬â¢s theory of motivation that isnââ¬â¢t well known is its importance in managing quality. A great paper by Heinz Weihrich shows the link between the Two Factor Theoryà of motivation and quality. He equates the reliability or ââ¬Å"Râ⬠factor of a product as being the hygiene factor and therefore customers have grown to expect products they purchase to be reliable. The ââ¬Å"Sâ⬠factor, the motivator, refers to the product features.
